Creeps are neutral units in Stormgate.
Game Effect[]
Creeps are found in camps that dot the map.[1] Creeps respawn after being killed.[2] Creep difficulty varies in accordance with their camp.[3]
Killing them grants players access to resources and strategic objectives.[1] The resources are obtained through last-hitting them. When a creep camp is destroyed, a structure will spawn in its place, representing which player has killed the creeps and gained the buff. When the creeps respawn, the structure disappears. As of June, 2023, the developers are still iterating on whether the structure can be captured by the opposing team before the creeps respawn in its place.[2]
Buffs[]
If a creep camp is removed, the player's forces (not just those who took out the creeps) receive a buff. The buffs are designed to not change how units fundamentally interact with each other, but rather simply amplify pre-existing properties. The types of buff from each camp are always the same on every map in every camp.[2] Types of buffs include:
- Increase construction speed[2]
- Increase damage to buildings[2]
- Increase siege damage[2]
- Increase worker speed[2]
- Resource Camp:
- Vision Camp: If this camp is defeated, the player is given vision in a given area around said camp. Lasts 240 seconds.
Development[]
Numerous RTS games served as the inspiration for creeps in Stormgate. The primary inspiration came from their counterparts in Warcraft III. Inspiration was also taken from StarCraft II in regards to creep tumors, with terran players incentivized to destroy creep tumors, and zerg players incentivized to keep spawning them, encouraging back-and-forth gameplay. The final inspiration was in MOBAs, how their creeps respawn in their maps. It was decided to apply this mechanic to creeps in Stormgate. In the developers' eyes, MOBAs "fixed" the problem of creeps in Warcraft III via their respawn mechanics, whereas in Warcraft III, matches could enter stalemates once creeps had been wiped out. Consequently, there are fewer creeps per map in Stormgate than Warcraft III per their respawn mechanics.[2]
Various iterations of creeps have existed during development, such as mercenary shops and a boss that spawns in the center of a map.[3]
