Earth is the primary setting of Stormgate. It is rich in animus, which has made it a high-value target for the Infernal Host.[1]
History[]
Ancient History[]
- The Whisperer(src)
c. 4900 BCE, the Infernals came to Earth. In the resulting conflict with the Celestial Armada, the Infernals were defeated, and prevented from re-entry to Earth due to the Suppressor.[2] In the aftermath, the Infernals served as the inspiration for demon myths held by various human cultures,[3] and artifacts from both species were left behind on the planet.[2]
The Brink[]
By the 21st century,[2] Earth was in dire straits, beset by human overpopulation, climate change, extreme weather, etc., putting humanity in a perilous position.[4] Beset by numerous catastrophes,[5] the planet entered (or was at risk of entering) a hothouse state.[6] To address the issues at hand, humanity initiated the Sigma Program.[4] Scientists began talking about "the Brink"—a point of no return for the planet.[2]
In the 22nd century, Earth was again invaded by the Infernal Host due to Clive Cullin disabling the Suppressor,[2] allowing a stormgate to form inside Sigma Polar.[7] The invasion decimated nearly all life on Earth, with survivors describing the event as "a world ablaze."[8] They were defeated by humanity, but the planet was devastated as a result,[9] with some regions devastated by humanity's use of chemical and/or nuclear weapons.[10]
Infernal War[]
Twenty years after the Infernals' invasion,[11] Earth remained in a ruined state, still a battleground between the Vanguard and Host.[12] The Celestial Armada later arrived to battle the Infernals for control of the planet, with humanity caught in-between the two species.[13]
Trivia[]
- It was originally stated that humanity survived an apocalyptic event[14] and that the Infernals invaded centuries later.[3] In Beyond the Brink however, it is revealed that the Infernals invaded in the early 22nd century, while the 21st century was a period of ecological collapse.
- The Stormgate X page lists its location as "Future Earth." (previously "Earth 2XXX AD").[15]
