Hero units (or simply heroes) are a type of unit in Stormgate.
Overview[]
Hero units feature in the game's campaign, as well as the 3v3 and co-op modes. However, they won't be accessible in the game's 1v1 mode. Heroes do not gain experience, nor are they able to carry items.[1]
Each hero has access to a levelling system that allows them to advance in levels. Players can choose which abilities to unlock and/or customize. A fully-levelled hero will not have access to every possible ability/buff..[2]
Campaign[]
In the game's campaign, the levelling system described above is retained. The levels persist over the duration of a campaign. During campaign, players can research and apply gear for their heroes. In the case of the Vanguard, gear is researched/applied aboard the Raptor One via a loadout system.[2]
Multiplayer[]
When one chooses a hero in multiplayer, their respective faction's tech tree is altered. Giving the player access to new units and alternate army compositions compared to the base faction.[3]
When starting Co-op, Blockade is free to all players, with progression fully unlocked. Other heroes are free to play until level 5, at which point they must be purchased for continued use. Each hero costs $10 USD.[4]
Hero progression is initially capped at level 15. Levels 1-10 feature the "core" linear progression for each hero, expanding their power kit, while levels 11+ open up customization through a gear system. The level cap will be raised later in development.[4]
List[]
Enemy hero units also appear outside the game's three playable factions. They have been listed below for the sake of consistency.
Celestial Armada[]
Infernal Host[]
Legion of Havoc[]
Vanguard[]
Development[]
Hero units were designed with feedback from the RTS community. A common thread was that players didn't like heroes in 1v1 competitive games, but enjoyed them in co-op and campaign modes.[5]
