Team Mayhem "greybox"

Team Mayhem "greybox"

Team Mayhem is the 3v3 gameplay mode of Stormgate. It will have a full release in late 2025.[1]

Gameplay[]

Team Mayhem features team-focused gameplay. It is intended that matches are short-to-medium in length, allowing multiple matches in a single play session.[2]

Rules[]

  • Two teams of three players start on opposite sides of the map
  • Each team has a heavily defended base in a very safe starting area
  • Each team's starting structure automatically generates Luminite over time and is invulnerable
  • Each team also shares an allied "Core" structure that is the main Win/Loss condition
  • Creep camps (map objectives) grant Therium
  • A major boss creep is located on the map and, once defeated, will march towards the enemy Core to attack it, ignoring enemy units along the way
  • No workers or starting scout units. All building, training, and upgrading is handled through a quick macro panel
  • Players can build anywhere within their team's vision
  • Each player chooses a specific hero, each of whom has access to five units, five structures, and five unit-specific upgrades, with a max supply of 100.
  • No top-bar abilities
  • Structures can be set to “auto-train” units
  • Expansion is limited to one structure (similar to a Collection Array), which is placed directly on a Luminite mine that auto-harvests[2]

Heroes[]

The heroes playable in the mode will be expanded over time. Some heroes may be exclusive to the mode. Unlike Co-op, heroes don't have meta progression. Instead, each hero level is capped in the mode. Currently, heroes do not have to be purchased for use in Team Mayhem.[2] Currently playable heroes (and associated units) include:

Development[]

The development of Team Mayhem was carried out from elements across the entirety of Frost Giant Studios. The original prototype of the mode was tested internally on a custom StarCraft II map c. 2020/'21, while SnowPlay was being built. A playtest was carried out in May, 2022. The prototype emphasized pulling combat out of the player’s base and focusing on shared objectives. This design aimed to reduce the pressure on individual players, making the game more enjoyable and less stressful, especially for newcomers. Combat centered around creep camps, capture points, and expansions, with the destruction of the enemy team’s shared structure acting as the central victory condition. These elements encouraged teamwork and prevented early eliminations, ensuring that players could enjoy the game from start to finish.[3]

The main inspiration for the mode's map design was StarCraft: Brood War, as the developers felt it struck a sweet spot between openness and chokepoints, as represented by Warcraft III and StarCraft II respectively.[3]

The name "Team Mayhem" was chosen as "it embodies the quick, frenetic multiplayer fun" the developers are aiming for. This was a change from the original "3v3" game because it was a departure from standard RTS mechanics, 3v3 or otherwise.[2]

The first internal playtests were limited to Amara Nassar as the mode's only playable hero, in order to help the team stay focused on the mode's gameplay rules rather than the balance of heroes or factions. Since then, our roster of playable heroes expanded.[2]

Closed alpha invites for Team Mayhem will be sent out in the end of 2024. The developers' aim is to finish work on the mode by the end of this year, and begin iterating on the mode in 2025 before wider release.[2]

Players could pick up batteries to charge their core by destroying Battery Towers.[2]
